RADIAN
An arc in a circle, equal in length to the radius; an angel (57.3 degrees) at the center of a circle, formed by 2 radii cutting off such an arc. Thus one radii = 57.3 degrees.
RAWHIDE MALLET
A mallet made with water buffalo hide ringed sections and center iron core with an iron and available in various sizes and weights used with mallet handle dies. A rawhide mallet should only be with a mallet handle die. If a steel hammer is used with a mallet handle die, the steel and steel contact will crystallize the die and cause damage to the die.
RE-RULING
Re-ruling refers to the re-knifing of a steel rule die to replace a dull or worn steel rule blade so that the die will be sharp again for continued effective use.
REAM
Five hundred sheets of paper.
REGISTRATION
A process where the material to be diecut is perfectly aligned or registered with the die that is going to diecut the material. Material can be either mechanically or optically registered to a die. Registration becomes very critical especially in close tolerance die cutting.
RELEASE
The force required freeing or separating a pressure-sensitive label from its release liner, using a specific measuring device.
RELEASE LINER
The components of the pressure-sensitive label stock, which functions as a carrier for the pressure-sensitive label. Prior to application, it protects the adhesive, and readily separates from the label immediately before the label is applied to product.
REPEATABILITY
The ability of a cutting die to reproduce an exact duplicate cut part after each cutting action. Reparability also refers to the ability of a system to exactly duplicate its actions. Specification denoting the ability of a plotter or samplemaker to return to a previous position accurately.
RESHARPENING
In resharpening a milled punch or milled die, a small amount of height is lost on the cutting edge as the edge is worn down. To re-sharpen, the cutting edge of the punch or die is machined back to its original state. Where the overall height is critical, the back of the milled punch or die is "spot welded" to add height, and then is precision ground to exact tolerances need.
RETRACTABLE DIE SAW
A steel rule diemaking jig saw in which the jig saw blade is attached to a lower post. When the saw is activated the blade rises from below the table and the upper section of the blade fits into upper post. When the saw is stopped, the blade retracts under the table.
REVERSE CREASE SCORE
A plate with an unsharpened ridge placed on the counter to produce a score from the inside of the carton. Used where a reverse fold id desired.
REVERSE CUT SCORE
Steel cutting plate to produce a partial cut through on the side of the printed piece.
REVERSE SCORE
Making a male score from the side opposite the normal die mount. Requires one to one impression.
RF HEAT SEAL DIES
A die that heat seals various layers of vinyl plastics together using radio frequency energy in a RF Heat Sealing machine. ROCKWELL C. A scale or test used to define hardness in metals, particularly steel and titanium.
ROLLER DIE PRESS
A cutting press that performs diecutting by passing a steel rule die and the material to be die cut between two rollers. All the energy of the cut is focused at the point where the top and bottom rollers converge together.
ROTARY DIE
A curved cutting die, used in a rotary die cutter. It can be constructed in several methods using curved steel rule blades more being machined by CNC or EDM methods from a solid cylinder blank. Flexible etched magnetic rotary dies are curved around a magnetic cylinder.
ROTARY DIE CUTTER
A cutting press that cuts and scores a soft to semi-rigid material with rotating (rotary) dies. Principal benefits are speed and long die life.
ROTARY DIE CUTTING PRESSES
A cutting press with two rotary cylinders. One cylinder has a cutting jacket mounted to it and acts as the diecutting surface. The other cylinder has a rotary steel rule die or full hardness rotary die attached to it. Sheet stock for folding cartons or corrugated boxes can easily be a diecut on rotary die press.
ROTARY DIEBOARD WOOD
The dieboard used in producing a rotary steel rule die. Described as: (1) Number of ply. (2) Thickness, (3) Length, (4) inside diameter.
ROTARY DIEBOARDS
Dieboards formed into a cylinder for use on a rotary die cutting press. The rotary dieboards are used with rotary dieblades.
ROTARY STEEL RULE
Rotary steel rule is a curved rule used in the manufacture of steel rule rotary dies. This rule is described as (1) Serrated, non-serrated, or scalloped. (2) Side bevel or center bevel. (3) Curved or straight. In case of curved rule, the pitch circle and circumference is specified. (4) Notched or not notched. (5) Thickness in points. (6) Height of the rule.
ROTARY WEB PRESS
A rotary die presses which diecuts parts from a continuous role of material. The roll of goods feed into the press and emerge diecut with the diecut pieces in the web of material.
RUBBER EJECTION
Rubber used to eject the finished product from a cutting die.
RUBBERING
Resilient material added to a cutting die to release product and scrap from the die.
RULE PROCESSOR
A computer controlled automatic or semi-automatic machine that cuts steel rule die blades to an exact length and cuts the notches into the rule in the exact locations, needed for placement into the dieboard.
RULE PULLER
A hard tool used to remove steel rule from a cutting die.
